Tribute to Professor Kopin Liu
We are honored here to have this opportunity to cel- ebrate Prof. Kopin Liu’s 70th birthday in the Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics and thank him for his great contributions to the development of molecular reaction dynamics. Kopin has been one of the leading figures in the field of crossed molecular beams experiments and one of the pioneers in combining the crossed molecu- lar beams method with laser detection techniques. He joined the field of crossed molecular beams scattering about 40 years ago as a postdoctoral researcher with Professor John Polanyi at University of Toronto. He has conducted his own independent research at Georgia In- stitute of Technology (on transient OH radical measure- ments in the troposphere), Argonne National Labora- tory (initially on the transition metal clusters and later on the crossed-beam inelastic scatterings of small rad- icals), and Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences (IAMS) of the Academia Sinica (on the reactive scat- terings). He first developed the Doppler selected time of flight method, and then designed the time-sliced ion velocity imaging technique to continuously promote the development of experimental methods for studying re- active scattering. In particular, the time sliced velocity map imaging technique has shown tremendous advan- tages in reaction scattering studies, enabling the acquire- ment of product-pair information in chemical reactions. Using these methods developed by himself, Kopin has made extensive contributions to basic reaction research, specifically in Mode-, bond-, and stereo-specific chem- istry, ultrafast photochemistry and photophysics, and coherence and correlation in molecular processes.
Over the past decades, Kopin has been invited to give more than 150 invited lectures at important aca- demic meetings, including 80 Plenary or Keynote re- ports. Kopin not only has close relationship with the international academic community, but also maintains frequent academic exchanges with the institutions in the mainland. He has close communications with Fudan University, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Univer- sity of Science and Technology of China, Nanjing Uni- versity etc. Since 2001, he has been Associate Editor of the Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics. He has partic- ipated in almost every National Conference on Chemical Dynamics and Cross-Strait Conference on Chemical Dy- namics. Kopin has played a very important role in the Chinese community of Chemical Dynamics and has made important contributions to the development of reaction dynamics in China. In all of our impressions, Kopin has always been a wise researcher and an excellent advisor. Kopin has long been passionate about the development of scattering experiments, and has served on many com- mittees or editorial board that he considered meaningful many year ago. As an outstanding experimentalist, Prof. Kopin Liu provides a better way for all of us to study the reaction dynamics. At this memorable moment, we congratulate him on his 70th birthday.
