Precisely Controlled Synthesis of Pt-Pd Octahedral Nanoframes as a
Superior Catalyst towards Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Platinum based catalysts are an important component of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In our work, we, for the first time, successfully synthesized Pt-Pd octahedral nanofrems through site-selected deposition of Pt atoms onto Pd octahedral seeds and selective removal of Pd octahedral cores. Due to the combination of three-dimensional open geometrical structure and Pt-skin surface compositional structure, the Pt-Pd octahedral nanoframes/C catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and stability towards oxygen reduction reaction, it shows a mass activity of 1.15 A/mgPt, 5.8 times enhancement in mass activity as compared with commercial Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, even after 8000 cycles of accelerated durability test, the Pt-Pd octahedral nanoframes/C catalyst still shows a good catalytic activity.
