pH Effect on the Oxidation of Hydrogen Peroxide at Au(111) Electrode in Alkaline Solutions

Abstract:
Hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction (HPOOR) on Au(111) electrode in alkaline solutions with various pH from 10 to 13 are examined systematically. We found that with the increase of solution pH, HPOOR activity increases and the slope of the i-E curve decreases. HO2- is suggested to be the main reactive species for HPOOR in the alkaline media, the fast kinetics for HPOOR in alkaline media with high pH is attributed to the beneficial electrostatic interaction between the positively charged electrode and the reactive anions, i.e., HO2- and OH-,the increase of the concentration of these reactants with pH as well as the increase of the thermodynamic driving force for HO2- oxidation.
