Direct observation of TiSe2、MoTe2 and TaS2 in solution with scanning tunneling microscope

Abstract:
We present a new method to image TiSe2, MoTe2 and single TaS2 crystal in liquid condition using our homebuilt scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). By directly cleaving of single crystals in liquid, we were able to keep the fresh surface not oxidized within a few hours. Using the homebuilt scanning tunneling microscope, we have obtained atomic resolution images of TiSe2 crystal accompanied with the single atom defects as well as the triangle defects in solution for the first time. We also have observed the superstructure of MoTe2 crystal. Besides, the hexagonal charge-density wave domains structure in nearly commensurate (NC) phase of TaS2 also was obtained at room temperature (295K). Our research has demonstrated a new way to investigate the atomic structure and defect structure of single crystals.
