Three-body Photodissociation of Thionyl Chloride

Abstract:
The ultrafast photodissociation dynamics of thionyl chloride after excitation to the electronically excited state with a 235 nm pump pulse are studied using a femtosecond pump-probe technique combined with time-of-flight mass spectroscopy. The observed parent transient indicates that the initially excited states at 235 nm are extremely short-lived, that is, approximately 166 fs. The experimental results suggested a complex multichannel mechanism involving both concerted and stepwise three-body dissociation pathways.
