Substituent effects on the 13C NMR and 1H NMR chemical shifts of CH=N in multi-substituted benzylideneanilines

Abstract:
Fifty-three samples of multi-substituted benzylideneanilines XArCH=NArYs (XBAYs) were synthesized, and their NMR spectrum were determined in this paper. Together with the NMR data of other 129 samples of di-substituted XBAYs quoted from literatures, an extensional study of substituent effects on the 1H NMR chemical shifts (?H?CH=N?) and 13C NMR chemical shifts (?C?CH=N?) of the CH=N bridging group were made from di-substituted to multi-substituted XBAYs based on total 182 samples of XBAYs. The results showed that the substituent cross-interaction effect parameter (??????? played an important role in quantifying the ?C?CH=N? of XBAYs, while it was negligible in quantifying their ?H?CH=N? values. The other substituent parameters also presented different effects on their ?C?CH=N? values and ?H?CH=N? values. On the whole, the contributions of X and Y to the ?C?CH=N? of XBAYs were balanced, but the ?H?CH=N? of XBAYs mainly relied on the substituent effects of X.
