Production of Benzene From Lignin through Current Enhanced Catalytic Conversion

Abstract:
A new route for directional production of aromatic platform molecule, benzene, was achieved by the current-enhanced catalytic conversion of lignin. The main character of this strategy is using the synergistic effect between catalyst and current to promote the depolymerization of lignin and the selective recombinant of the functional groups in the aromatic monomers.The transformation allows a high benzene yield of 175 g benzene (kg lignin)-1 with an excellent selectivity of 92.9 %. The process potentially provide a promising route for production of the basic petrochemical materials and development of higher value-added chemicals using renewable biomass.
