Homogeneous Degradation of Cellulose in its Aqueous Solution at Low Temperature under Atmosphere Pressure

Abstract:
Degradation of cellulose to chemicals is one of major route for biomass conversion. Here, a new simple and two-step method has been developed to convert cellulose in its homogeneously alkaline solution to organic acids under atmosphere pressure at low temperature. At first, cellulose was degraded to small molecular intermediates at 110 °C for 3h under atmosphere pressure, and then it was oxidized with H2O2 at 50°C for 4h. Under the condition of the optimal, 73.5% conversion of cellulose can be achieved, and the yield of organic acids were 32.8% (formic acid), 11.6% (lactic acid), and 2.3% (oxalic acid) respectively. It is noteworthy that the new strategy reduces energy consumption in the process of reaction, unlike the hydrothermal reaction under high temperature and high pressure.

低温常压下纤维素在其均相水溶液中的降解

降解纤维素为化学品是生物质转化研究的主要路线之一。本文报道了一个简单的在低温与常压下两步法直接均相转化纤维素为小分子有机酸的过程,首先,纤维素溶解于水相碱性溶液中,并在常压下于110 °C反应3h得到初步降解产物,而后该产物以H2O2为氧化剂,再于50°C反应4h,即得到小分子有机酸的降解产物。纤维素的转化率达73.5%,主要产物包括甲酸(32.8%),乳酸(11.6%), 和草酸(2.3%)。值得强调的是,新的过程避免了传统的水热法的高能耗与对水热设备的要求,可以在低温与常压下进行,有利于发展新的纤维素转化新技术。
