Optical Studies of Heavy Metal Fluoride Glasses

Abstract:
The optical characteristics of Heavy Metal Fluoride (HMF) glasses containing Lan-thanum and Cerium have been studied. Optically excited fluorescence measurements on glass sam-ples containing different concentrations (5% and 8%) of cerium show the characteristic excitation and emission spectra of cerium in a fluoride environment with a broad emission peaking at 310nm, when excited at 290nm. All the samples measured had essentially identical spectra apart from a glass containing zirconium substituted for hafnium in which the emission intensity was extremely low. The absorption edge for the HMF glass samples was derived from the optical transmission data. It was noted that the emission spectrum lies close to the band-edge. The absorption depth for these HMF glass samples was measured using the XRD technique. The dispersion behaviour of the HMF glasses in the UV, Vis and NIR was studied and fitted with the sellmeier formula. Re-fractive index measurements show that HMF glasses containing hafnium and either lanthanum or cerium have a low refractive index for their density and low dispersion. It was observed that the HMF glass samples having the same composition have almost the same refractive indices but differ with a slight change in composition. The dispersive power of the glasses was characterized by the Abbe Number. These glasses could be promising candidates for fast, radiation-resistant, scintil-lator elements in electromagnetic Calorimeters used at high energies.

摘要:
介绍含有镧、铈、铪、锆等重金属氟化玻璃(HMF)的光学性质。光激发荧光的测量是在含有不同浓度金属铈(5%及8%)的氟化玻璃中进行的。在氟环境中,这种玻璃表现出很强的激发特性和发射荧光光谱。在激发光波长为290nm时,样品光谱峰值较宽并位于310nm处。相同元素构成的样品都有几乎相同的光谱,只有当玻璃中用锆代替铪时,其出射光强相当小。折射实验表明,含有铪、镧、铈的样品折射率都很低。同时还观察到,相同组分的氟化玻璃其折射率完全相同,而组分不同就能观察到折射率较大的变化。折射实验数据均采用Sellmeier公式进行了曲线拟合。阿贝数是在含有铈和镧的样品中测量并计算出结果。
