We investigated the structures of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [BMIM]Cl–water mixtures alone or combined with the lignin model compound (MC) 2,6-dimethoxyphenol through attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) absorption spectroscopy. The ATR-IR spectra of the [BMIM]Cl ionic liquid (IL)–water mixtures within the OH vibration region of 3200–3800 cm?1 initially blueshifted by approximately 23 cm?1 and stabilized within the IL mole fraction range of 0.1228
