Diffussion Controlled Reaction of Fe(CO)3 and CO in Ar and Xe Matrices
-
Abstract
The diffussion controlled reaction of Fe(CO)3 and CO in low temperature Ar and Xe matrices has been studied by measuring the decay rate of Fe(CO)3 caused by the recombination of Fe(CO)3 and CO. Fe(CO)5 isolated in Ar and Xe matrices is photolyzed to generate Fe(CO)3 with a 280nm pulsed laser. A Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer is used to monitor the decay of Fe(CO)3 after the laser irradiation. The data are fitted by Smoluchowski diffusion controlled reaction kinetic theory satisfactorily. The reaction radius of Fe(CO)3 and CO obtained is 4.0×10-10m, and the diffusion coefficients of CO in Ar and Xe matrices at 10K are 2.2×10-23and 4.5×10-23m2/s, repectively.
