Triplet Excited State and Radical Cation of C60 form Pulse Radiolysis in Solutions

    • The transient absorption spectra or C60 in benzene with and without CCl4 or CCl3CF3 in pulse radiolysis have been measured in the visible region. Following the pulse radiolysis of C60 in pure benzene solution, the generation of the excited triplet state 3C60* is observed at about 740nm via the triplet-triplet energy transfer form 3C6H6* to C60. The rate constants of quenching 3C60* by oxygen and the ground-state of C60 have been determined to be 2×109M-1s-1 and 9×108M-1s-1, respectively. The pulsed radiolytic generation of radical canon C60+. in benzene containing CCl4 or CCl3CF3 via electron transfer from 3C60* to electron acceptor (CCl4 or CCl3CF3) has been confirmed for the first time by the appearance of a novel absorption peak at around 650nm.
