Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopic Study of a Diabetic Cataractous Lens
-
Abstract
The Fourier Transform Raman spectroscopic method was employed to determine the contents of the normol rat lens and galactose-induced diabetic cateractous rat lens. Raman spectrum of disbetic cataractous lens was compared with that of the normal lens. These spectra show appreciable difference in the relative intensity of the tyrosine doublet near 840cm-1 during the galactose-induced diabetic cataract formation. This indicates that the strength of hydrogen bonding by certain tyrosyl residues enhances upon the aggregation of crystallines in the lens opacification.
