Effects of Diffusion and Inhomogeneities on Chemical Reaction Rates and Multiple Steady State Transitions: Effect of Stirring

    • Based on the theory of nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics, the effects of diffusion and inhompgeneities on the chemical reaction rates and multiple steady state behaviors are studied for the chemical reaction model which involves three bimolecular steps (A+B→C+D, B+C⇆2B) under CSTR conditions. By considering the relation between diffusing and stirring, a parameter P is introduced to characterize qualitatively the extent of inhomogeneity of ststem. Our results show that inhomogeneities can not only change the range of bistable region but also, under some proper conditions, induce nonequilibrium transitions. These are qualitatively similar to the effects of stirring on the dynamical behaviors of chemical reaction systems which have been found experimently in recent years.
