The Structure and Ionic Conductivity of DMF-Montmorillonite

    • Montmorillonite (Mont.) is a layer structure natural mineral which has been studied rather widely in the solid state ionics field as a fast ionic conductor in recent years. As a rule the interlayer region of montmiorillonite is consisted of a quantity of water so that it is unsuitable for solid electrolyte used in high energy density battery such as lithium cell. For this reason that Mont. must be denatured by organic compound such as N-N-Dimethyl Formamid (DMF), propylene Carbonate (PC) etc. which substitute for the interlayer water of mont. to get organic mont. and it is possible that the organic mont. as solid electrolyte is applied into solid high energy lithium and magnesium battery systems.
In this paper we studied the structure and ionic conductivity of DMF-mont. and got some interesting results.
Complicated interlayer structure was formed by DMF into mont..Several typical interlater structures of DMF-mont. were obtained and analysed by XRD, DTA and TR. Their structures were discussed. It is indicated that interlayer DMF molecules of DMF -mont. play an important role in conduction of ions by studying the electrical performance of samples. Application of DMF-mont. in solid state battery can overcome the degeneratoin of cell anode by water and good cell performance was obtained.
