A New Design for Flowing Electrolyte Electrode System
-
Abstract
According to the law of fluid velocity distribution of the elliptic paraboloid in rectangular conduit, wa have designed a new set-up of flowing electrolyte electrode. The electrode is embedded in the center of conduit wall. The ratio of the electrode width to the wall width is less than 1/4. In this case the velocity differences of fluid flowing over electrode surface is less than 6%, and the uniform velocity distrbution can be obtained. So it will be possible to examine electrode reaction under conditions of equal mass transfer with laminar or turbulent. If the rectangular area is equal to 2mm×8mm and the fluid velocity is below 60cm/sec, the Reynolds number (Re) is not more than 2000 and the flow is laminar.
This electrode system has been used in transient and steady electrochemistry measurements. Because the adsorbed bubbles and the solid products rise on the electrode surface can be easily removed by flowing fluid, the data obtained from it are better than that from the rotating disk electrode concering the reliability. This set-up is very convenient to operation besides lower cost, and it can be used as a common cell for electrochemistry measurement as well as an in-situ monitor.
