Angular Momentum Transitions in Collisions of Sr(5p1P1) with Ar

Abstract
The collision induced angular momentum transitions of Sr(5p1P1) from Ml=0 to Ml=±1 with Ar as collision partner is carried out in a beam-gas reaction apparatus. The depolarization rate constant kp=2.5±0.5×10-9 cm3mol-1s-1 is obtained, and the angular momentum tramsition cross section σT=2nm2 deduced from depolarization rate constant. The large cross section is attribute to long range interaction between Sr(5p1P1) and Ar.
